Oregon's Fall Salmon Bonanza: River to Sea

Looking for the ultimate Oregon salmon adventure? Our full-day charter gets you on the water when the bite is hot, targeting both Chinook and Coho from the rivers to the coastal waters. We've got all the gear and local know-how to put you on fish, whether you're a seasoned pro or it's your first time wetting a line for these hard-fighting Pacific beauties.

Trip Overview

Rise and shine, anglers! We'll meet at the dock at 5:30 AM, just as the sky starts to lighten. This early start gives us prime time on the water when salmon are most active. Over the next 8 hours, we'll hit both river and inshore hotspots, adapting our tactics to where the fish are biting. The trip wraps up at 1:30 PM, typically with a cooler full of fresh salmon and plenty of fish stories to share. Available weekends from August through November, this is your chance to experience the legendary fall salmon run that Oregon is famous for.

Tactics for Tackling Salmon

We don't just stick to one method - we use whatever it takes to get those salmon in the boat. We'll start by trolling the river mouths, using downriggers to get our lures right in the strike zone. As we move into the estuaries, we might switch to drift fishing, letting our bait work its magic in the current. For those who prefer a more active approach, we'll break out the spinning gear for some cast-and-retrieve action along the banks. And when we hit the open water, it's time for the heavy tackle. We use top-quality rods, reels, and terminal tackle, all provided so you can focus on the fight rather than fussing with gear.

What Keeps 'Em Coming Back

Folks who fish with us rave about the variety this trip offers. One minute you're in the peaceful river setting, the next you're bouncing over ocean swells. It's like getting two trips in one. Plus, the fall colors along the riverbanks are a show-stopper. But let's be real - it's the salmon that steal the scene. There's nothing quite like the rush when a big Chinook hits your line and starts peeling drag. Whether you're after a trophy for the wall or some of the best-eating fish you'll ever taste, this trip delivers.

Salmon Showdown: Chinook vs Coho

Chinook Salmon, also known as Kings, are the heavyweights of the Pacific salmon world. These bruisers can top 50 pounds, though 20-30 pounders are more common on our trips. They're renowned for their rich, fatty meat that's perfect for grilling or smoking. Chinook love to hang out in deeper holes and around structure, so we'll target them with larger lures and bait. The fall run brings in some of the biggest fish of the year, with their trademark dark coloration that gave them the nickname "blackmouth."

Coho Salmon, or Silvers, might be smaller than Chinook, but what they lack in size they make up for in acrobatics. These high-flyers put on a real show when hooked, often leaping clear out of the water multiple times. Most Coho we catch range from 6 to 12 pounds, with some trophy fish pushing 20. They tend to school up more than Chinook, so when you find them, the action can be fast and furious. Coho meat is a bit lighter in color and flavor compared to Chinook, but it's still top-notch table fare. These fish are suckers for flashy lures, so we often use spinners or hoochies when targeting them.

Time to Land Your Spot

If you're itching to tangle with some of the Pacific Northwest's most prized game fish, now's the time to book. Our weekends fill up fast, especially as word gets out about hot bites. Remember, we're limited to just two anglers per trip, which means personalized attention and plenty of room to fish. Don't let this season's run pass you by - grab your spot on the boat and get ready for some world-class Oregon salmon fishing. The salmon are waiting, and so are we!

Learn more about the species

Chinook Salmon

Chinook salmon, also called kings, are the heavyweights of Pacific salmon. These bruisers typically run 15-30 pounds but can top 50 in our waters. You'll find them in deeper river channels and along the coast, especially near river mouths. Fall is prime time as they stage for their spawning runs. Anglers love targeting kings for their hard-fighting spirit and rich, flavorful meat. When hooked, they'll often make long, powerful runs and use their size to their advantage. To improve your odds, try trolling with cut-plug herring at different depths until you find the right zone. Kings can be picky, so don't be afraid to switch up your presentation if they're not biting. There's nothing quite like the thrill of battling one of these iconic fish on light tackle.

Chinook Salmon

Coho Salmon

Coho salmon, or silvers, are the acrobats of our local salmon. Usually in the 6-12 pound range, these fish are known for their spectacular leaps when hooked. You'll often find them in estuaries and nearshore waters, especially around creek mouths and kelp beds. Late summer into fall is the sweet spot for cohos as they prepare for their spawning run. Anglers prize silvers for their scrappy nature and excellent table fare. When they're on, the action can be fast and furious. A local trick is to use bright-colored spinners or flies on cloudy days - cohos seem to key in on the flash. Don't set the hook too early though; let them turn with it first. The fight of a silver on light gear is hard to beat, especially when they go airborne. It's a blast every time.
