Double the Fun: Oregon Coast Salmon & Crab Combo

Get ready for the ultimate Oregon Coast adventure with our Salmon & Crab Combo trip. This 8-hour journey kicks off at the crack of dawn, setting you up for a day packed with coastal action. You'll be dropping crab pots, reeling in salmon, and soaking in the rugged beauty of the Pacific Northwest. It's the perfect mix of fishing and crabbing, giving you a taste of what makes the Oregon Coast a angler's paradise.

What to Expect on the Water

We'll meet up at 5:30 AM sharp, ready to hit the water as the sun peeks over the horizon. First order of business? Dropping those crab pots in prime Dungeness territory. Then, it's all about chasing salmon. We'll be targeting both Chinook and Coho, using tried-and-true local techniques to put you on the fish. Don't sweat it if you're new to this – we've got all the gear and know-how to get you hooked up. As the day winds down, we'll circle back to check those crab pots. It's like Christmas morning for seafood lovers when we start hauling 'em up!

Techniques & Gear Rundown

For salmon, we'll be using a mix of trolling and mooching, depending on what the fish are feeling that day. We'll rig up with flashers, hoochies, and maybe even some cut-plug herring if the bite's on. When it comes to crabbing, we're talking about heavy-duty pots baited with fish carcasses or chicken – Dungeness can't resist it. All the gear's provided, from rods and reels to crab pots and bait. Just bring your A-game and maybe a lucky hat.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Chinook Salmon, aka King Salmon, are the heavyweights of the Pacific. These bruisers can top 50 pounds and put up a fight that'll have your arms burning. Fall's prime time for Chinooks on the Oregon Coast, when they're fattened up and ready to run the rivers. They're not just big, they're smart – so landing one is a real badge of honor.

Coho Salmon, or Silvers, might not match Chinooks in size, but what they lack in weight, they make up for in acrobatics. These high-flyers are known for their spectacular leaps and blistering runs. Fall Coho are especially prized for their rich, red flesh. When a school of Coho moves through, the action can be fast and furious.

Dungeness Crab are the unsung heroes of this trip. While you're focused on salmon, these tasty crustaceans are crawling into our pots. Oregon Dungeness are some of the best eating you'll find anywhere – sweet, tender, and perfect for a post-trip feast. The best part? You don't have to do anything but wait for the pots to soak while you're chasing salmon.

Why Anglers Keep Coming Back

This combo trip is like hitting the coastal jackpot. Where else can you chase trophy salmon and load up on world-class crab in the same day? It's the variety that keeps folks coming back year after year. One minute you're locked in battle with a chrome-bright Chinook, the next you're pulling up a pot full of snappin' Dungeness. And let's not forget the scenery – the rugged Oregon coastline is worth the trip alone. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just getting your feet wet, this trip delivers the goods.

Learn more about the species

Chinook Salmon

Chinook salmon, also known as kings, are the heavyweights of Pacific salmon. These brutes can top 30 pounds, with most in the 15-25 pound range. They're prized for their fight and rich, flavorful meat. You'll find them in deeper water, often hugging the bottom. Fall is prime time as they push into rivers to spawn. Kings love to smash big lures and baits - try slow-trolling a whole herring or large plug. When you hook one, hang on tight! They're known for long, powerful runs. Patience is key - let them tire themselves out before trying to land them. Nothing beats the rush of battling a big king salmon. Just remember to keep your rod tip up and reel when you can.

Chinook Salmon

Coho Salmon

Coho salmon, or silvers, are the acrobats of the salmon world. Averaging 8-12 pounds, these feisty fish are known for their spectacular leaps and fierce fights. You'll often find them in shallower water near the coast or in estuaries. Fall is the best time to target coho as they start their spawning run. They're aggressive and will hit a variety of lures - spinners, plugs, and flies all work well. When hooked, expect wild jumps and quick direction changes. Coho are also excellent table fare, with bright orange flesh. For a local trick, try "twitching" a jig with a long tail near submerged logs or undercut banks where coho like to hide. The erratic action can trigger explosive strikes.

Steelhead Trout

Steelhead are sea-run rainbow trout, spending part of their lives in the ocean before returning to rivers to spawn. They're sleek and silvery, typically 24-30 inches long, though some monsters push 40 inches. You'll find them in coastal rivers and streams from late fall through spring. Steelhead are prized for their acrobatic fights and challenge to catch. They're notoriously picky, earning the nickname "fish of a thousand casts." Fly fishing with nymphs or swinging streamers are popular methods. For gear anglers, try drifting roe or tossing spinners in deep pools and runs. When you hook one, be ready for anything - they're known for blistering runs and aerial displays. A local tip: focus on fishing the "soft water" behind boulders where steelhead rest on their upstream journey.
